About Resource
Everyday Democracy is a capacity building organization that provides technical assistance to those who work to support multiracial democracy in their communities across the U.S. For nearly three decades, they have provided tools and resources that help individuals and organizations to build the skills they need to facilitate community-driven change through a lens of racial equity.
Their approach is multitiered. They partner with organizations across 13 states, and they use their “Dialogue to Change” approach with many of their community partners. They have used this process to help communities address racial tensions after hate crimes, reduce acheivement gaps between white students and students of color, and act on many other societal issues relevant to their partners. Everyday Democracy also hosts extended learning experiences for emerging leaders who want to develop their inclusive community leadership skills.
How to Use
Everyday Democracy is useful to individuals and organizations who are committed to developing strong, racially equitable democracies in their local communities. Their website briefly details the kinds of support, resources, and networks that Everyday Democracy can provide.
For those interested in employing the “Dialogue to Change” approach in their communities, the “Dialogue and Engagement” page under “What We Do” offers a brief overview and model of the process along with three examples of the model in use in Florida, New Hampshire, and Maryland. Each example has an accompanying video, and more information can be found via the “Learn More” button.
For those interested in partnering with Everyday Democracy to engage in training and to connect with a network of leaders, the “Partner Initiative” page outlines three initiatives that individuals can partake in. These initiatives include the Connecticut Civic Ambassadors, the Safety and Justice for All Program, and the MacArthur Foundation Safety and Justice Challenge. The “Leadership Initiatives” page contains more opportunities for interested individuals to hone their community engagement skills. The Everyday Leaders and Community Changemakers programs are extended learning opportunities for a cohort of leaders. Finally, interested organizations can learn about joining their network on the “Anchor Partners” page.
